A perpetual rebel, innovator and creator of ambiance. Before he found his place in the hotel industry, he became famous as a co-owner of the cult nightclub Studio 54. Having served a year of prison time for tax evasion, he started opening his own hotels as he could not find one that would please him. Being a combination of an interesting idea, provocative design and excellent service, his establishments – referred to as boutique hotels – escaped all efforts of standardization and attracted crowds of guests who valued high quality and desired spectacular thrills. At the end of the 20th century, with eight hotels and 4,200 rooms, Ian Schrager became the hotel king in Manhattan. His collection used to include some other exceptional establishments in Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, London and Chicago.
